It all begins with an idea.
Hello and welcome to the scariest but also most exciting place to be.
I’m Becca and in my free time I love making handmade paper. I try to lead my life with an environmentally conscious foot so when I discovered papermaking, I knew it would be something that I’d be passionate about. What started off as recycling a few scraps of paper here and there turned into claiming my garage and mudroom as my “papermaking studio”. The scientist in me is enjoying the experiments and results while the academic in me enjoys learning about the extensive history and how it has become what it is today.
I’ve started taking in depth notes about the processes I’ve been doing, what does and doesn’t work. Lots of people ask me questions about papermaking and how to get started. What fibers do you use? What do you use to get the vibrant colors? How do you dry them?
I am by no means an expert.
I started this journey 3 years ago with my best friend in her dining room. Messes were made. Frustrations were had. I still get pretty frustrated when something doesn’t work out the way I intended. Happens more often than I’d like to admit. I don’t have all the answers but I figured my experience as of yet could help some of you and maybe open up a discussion about papermaking.
“So what does that mean? What are you even going to be writing about?”
Well, I don’t know. Everything. The history. Things I’ve learned. Things I don’t know. Experiments. We’ll see. This is all a work in progress. I’m not a writer but I’m hoping this will be a great way to have an archive of my experiences and maybe one day I can look back and see how far I’ve come.
Think of this as a virtual diary that everyone can read.
